Curtis Garcia: Black Marble, Bison

Gar-ci-a

Behold the majestic beauty of a bison, its fierce and noble presence captured in stunning detail. With turquoise eyes that seem to pierce into the soul of every observer, this carving exudes power and strength. The intricate sgrafitto designs etched into its body add a dimension of artistry and complexity, showing the skill and precision of Curtis's hand. Each line tells a story, each curve evokes emotion. The contrasting colors create a visual feast for the senses, with the deep black of the marble complementing the vibrant turquoise hues perfectly. This bison stands as a symbol of endurance, resilience, and untamed spirit - an embodiment of nature's raw magnificence captured in stone.

Bison (Si:wolo) is especially important to the Plains Indians. These magnificent animals were the basis of their lifeway before they were hunted to extinction by the white man. While not a traditional fetish subject for the Zunis, all animals have meaning and Bison reminds us of abundance and prayer.
