Christopher Peina: Antler, Owl

Christopher Peina: Antler, Owl

Pay-nah

Deer antler is a popular material used in carving Zuni carvings due to its durability, unique texture, and cultural significance. The Zuni people have been creating intricate carvings from antler for generations, with each piece telling a story or representing spiritual beliefs. The natural curve and color variations of deer antler make it ideal for creating small sculptures and carvings . Many Zuni carvers believe that the use of deer antler connects them to nature and helps imbue their creations with spiritual energy. Whether depicting animals, ancestral figures, or symbols of protection, each Zuni carving made from deer antler is a beautiful work of art that preserves traditional techniques and honors the cultural heritage of the Zuni people.

Owl (Muhukwi): Owls can see what others cannot and this is a large part of Owl (Muhukwi) medicine. Owl’s ability to do this reminds us of the importance of both worlds: the physical as well as the spiritual, perhaps the known and the unknown. Our willingness and courage to transform the unknown in ourselves into the known is a true source of wisdom. The Zuni Pueblo people call the owl “the Night Grandfather” because he does his work at night. Clairvoyant properties and uncovering deception have always been associated with Owl. Its connection with wisdom comes from Owl’s ability to discern that which cannot be “seen.”
