Alvin Calavaza: Dolomite, Horse

Alvin Calavaza: Dolomite, Horse

Ca-la-va-za

Dolomite, a type of mineral composed primarily of calcium and magnesium carbonate, is known for its beautiful white or light gray hue with streaks of other colors such as green or brown. The use of dolomite as a medium for carving allows the carver to capture the strength and elegance of the horse's form while maintaining a smooth and polished finish. This particular carving evokes a sense of gracefulness, with its arched neck and flowing mane frozen in time. Its expressive eyes seem to gaze into the distance, capturing the curiosity and intelligence inherent in these magnificent creatures.

Horse (Du:shi): Horse brought power to the People. After the horse arrived on the Plains, people were able to move faster with heavier burdens, they could hunt game more efficiently, and they became fiercer warriors. Horse affords mobility that gives us freedom and power, but not the power that weighs us down. We need to be mindful that the most positive relationships are cooperative ones. All participants must respect the power of others with acceptance and tolerance. Our relationship to Horse differs from relationships between man and any other animal because it is a relationship requiring a deep understanding, without which the strength and benefits of Horse are inaccessible.
