Collection: Faye Quandelacy (d)

(1958-2022)

Faye Quandelacy, Sandra's younger sister is an accomplished maiden carver. She began carving around the mid 60's at the age of 8. She learned the craft from Lavina Tsikewa and has specialized in carving large, intricate maidens throughout her career, often featuring an eagle perched on the maiden, a motif she developed after attending art school in her younger days. In recent years, Faye has focused more on smaller maiden carvings, but her work is still highly sought after, particularly her pieces depicting eagles and bears protecting the maiden, which reference a Zuni creation story about animals saving the tribe from a flood. Faye has also taken on the role of family matriarch, organizing the production of the Quandelacy "Grandmother" fetish necklaces, which feature one carving by each of the children framed by one of Faye's distinctive fossil ivory maiden centerpieces.
